Meiosis

Meiosis is cell division by reduction, it occurs in the division of the gametes (Oogonium in females and Spermatogonium in the male), thus producing a half set of chromosomes, which is compound afterwards to a full set.

In Meiosis I = reduction division the homologous chromosomes are distributed into 2 cells, these two cells now have a haploid set of the chromosomes.
Meiosis II = equation division works like mitosis.
Now there are 4 haploid gametes - 2 from each parent, which are ready for fertilization:

Some terms

Term Meaning
Meiosis reduction division of gametes
Mitosis Two identical daughter cells are produced from one parent cell.
diploid normal body cell with the double set of chromosomes
haploid cell with a single set of chromosomes (for example: a mature oogonium)
Gamete noun to indicate either the oogonium or the spermatogonium
Oogonium gamete of the female
Spermatogonium Spermium, gamete of the male
homologous to correspond to each other
Replication Auto-duplication (new synthesis)
